This feeling too good not to share. I have been in the network marketing industry for a long time and had my share of good and not-so-good experiences. Aside from the aspect of direct product sales to customers, there has always been the awkward moment when speaking to a new contact or potential prospect when they ask the question,”What do you do?”

In fact, there are books written the network marketing and sales industry that focus a large portion of their pages on how to answer that one question. There is  the 30 second elevator speech and the One Minute BNI presentation. There’s the answer for cocktail parties and the one for family gatherings. I’ve used many, my most recent and favorite being, “I’m a home business strategist.”

It’s an intriguing line which was always followed by the question, “What does that mean?” Which led me to then talk about internet marketing, and business coaching and network marketing. It was rarely smooth, though it did create a lot interest and some great connections. But inside it usually feels awkward.

So the other day I was at Starbucks and overheard the neighboring table talking about Facebook and social media marketing. This is my area and so being shy and unassuming I said, “I do 90% of my business using social media, particularly Facebook.” It was a good segue and the conversation progressed until one of the men said, “What do you do?”

Without hesitation I replied, “I am a national promoter of the Body By Vi Challenge.” Which of course led to , “What is the Body By Vi Challenge?” Which allowed me to answer, “It is the fastest growing health challenge in the country. We are addressing fitness, health and obesity epidemic in the US.”

It was too good. It was so easy to say. There was no awkward moment and my new acquaintances were excited about learning more.  For me, the bottom line was that I did not have to search for the right answer. I didn’t feel weird about giving an answer that side-stepped the whole truth, because often people don’t respond well when you tell them you are a network marketer. I could share with 100% clarity, that I promote a health challenge that is changing people’s lives every day because it works. Being that clear is just too good!

Maybe next time I answer that question, I’ll also let them know that once they look great and feel fit, they can also drive a free black BMW… Ha!
